Water damage restoration in East Meadow.

East Meadow is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, in the middle of Nassau, with Eisenhower Park at its north end, the Meadowbrook Parkway along its west side and Hempstead Turnpike running through it. It sits on the flat ground of the old Hempstead Plains, well inland from the bay, so coastal flooding is not the issue here. Most East Meadow water damage starts inside the house or in the pipes leaving it. The housing is mostly postwar: Capes, ranches, split-levels and high-ranches built from the late 1940s into the 1960s, a lot of them with basements or partly below-grade lower levels that have since been finished as family rooms and bedrooms. Original galvanized supply lines and cast iron drains are still around in some of these homes, and both corrode from the inside. The sewer line running from the house out to the street can crack or fill with tree roots after decades, and when it backs up, sewage shows up first at the lowest drain in the house, often a basement floor drain or a lower-level shower. That is a contaminated water cleanup, not a simple dry-out. On flat lots, heavy rain can also pool against the foundation when gutters overflow or downspouts empty right at the wall, and it finds its way into lower levels through window wells and cracks. Whatever the source, drying needs to start fast, since mold can begin within 24 to 48 hours.

Common Questions

Water damage restoration in East Meadow — FAQ

Why does sewage come up through the floor drain in my East Meadow basement?+

The basement floor drain is usually the lowest opening in the plumbing, so it is the first place a blocked line shows itself. The most common cause in older East Meadow homes is the sewer line between the house and the street, which can crack, sag or fill with tree roots over the decades. Heavy storms that overload the system can do it too. Sewage is contaminated water, so soaked materials come out and everything else is cleaned and treated before drying.

Who issues permits for water damage repairs in East Meadow?+

East Meadow is an unincorporated hamlet, so permits come from the Town of Hempstead. Drying and cleanup do not normally need one. Rebuilding work like new plumbing, electrical or structural repairs can, so check with the town before the rebuild starts.

Is a sewer backup covered by homeowners insurance?+

Usually only if your policy includes a water backup or sewer backup endorsement, and that coverage often has its own limit. Without it, a standard policy commonly excludes backups from drains and sewer lines. Check your declarations page or ask your agent. We document the cause and the damage either way, so you have what you need for the claim.

How do I know whether the sewer line or the house plumbing is the problem?+

If several drains back up at once, especially the lowest ones, the main line out to the street is the likely cause. If it is one fixture, the problem is usually in that branch. A plumber can run a camera down the line to see cracks, sags or roots. In most cases the homeowner is responsible for the line from the house to the street connection, so it pays to find out before it backs up again.

Rain keeps getting into my East Meadow basement. What can I do?+

Start outside. Make sure gutters are clear, downspouts carry water several feet away from the house, and the ground slopes away from the foundation instead of toward it. Window well covers keep wells from filling in a downpour. If water still gets in, a basement waterproofing contractor can look at the foundation. We handle the drying and cleanup when it does get in.
