Water damage restoration in Wantagh.
Wantagh is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, on the South Shore between Bellmore and Seaford, with the Wantagh State Parkway running south to Jones Beach. When it comes to water damage, it is really two different places. The northern part of town, up toward Levittown, is mostly postwar houses: Levitt-era and similar Capes and ranches from the late 1940s and 1950s, many built on concrete slabs, and most of them added onto since. The calls there are inside-the-house problems. Supply lines and water heaters fail, washing machine hoses split, and slab leaks happen when an old pipe under the concrete lets go and water starts coming up through the floor. South of Merrick Road, the canals and the bay change everything. Those streets flooded badly in Superstorm Sandy in 2012, some homes have been raised since, and a strong nor'easter or coastal storm at high tide can still push bay water into garages, crawl spaces and ground floors. Groundwater sits close to the surface near the water, so lower spaces stay damp longer after a storm. Bay flooding is harder on a house than a burst pipe. It carries silt and debris, corrodes metal, and counts as contaminated water, so soaked drywall, insulation and carpet usually have to come out rather than be dried in place. In both parts of town, starting fast matters, because mold can begin within 24 to 48 hours.

Water damage restoration in Wantagh — FAQ
Is flood damage in south Wantagh covered by homeowners insurance?+
No. Standard homeowners policies exclude flooding from rising water, including bay water pushed in by a storm. That needs a flood policy, either through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier. NFIP policies generally have a 30-day waiting period, so buying one when a storm is in the forecast is too late. You can look up your address on FEMA's flood map to see what zone you are in.
What does a slab leak look like in an older Wantagh house?+
Common signs are a warm spot on the floor, the sound of running water when nothing is on, a water bill that jumps for no reason, damp or lifting flooring, or cracks in tile. Original Levitt houses were built on slabs, and some had heating pipes running through the concrete, which can also leak. A leak-detection plumber finds and fixes the pipe, and we dry the slab, the flooring and the walls around it.
Why does bay flooding mean more tear-out than a burst pipe?+
Water from a supply line starts out clean, so a lot of materials can be dried in place. Floodwater from the bay or canals is treated as contaminated because it carries silt, salt, fuel and sewage from outside. Porous materials it soaks, like drywall, insulation, carpet and pad, generally cannot be cleaned well enough to keep. Framing and concrete are cleaned, treated and dried.
Do I need a permit to rebuild after flooding in Wantagh?+
Usually yes for anything beyond cleanup and drying. Wantagh is an unincorporated hamlet, so permits go through the Town of Hempstead. In a flood zone there is another rule to know about: if the cost of repairs reaches half of the building's market value, the home may be considered substantially damaged and have to be brought up to current flood rules, which can mean elevating it. Ask the town early if your damage is heavy.
What should I do before a nor'easter if I live near the Wantagh canals?+
Move valuables, documents and electronics off the floor and out of the garage. Clear storm drains and gutters near the house, and test your sump pump if you have one. Take photos or a video of each room and its contents, because it makes a flood claim much easier. If water does come in, stay out of it until the power to that area is off.
